Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, complained in the early 19th century of “having that sinking feeling” during the afternoon as she bore the “intolerable wait” between breakfast and dinner. Her solution was to start a high tea tradition where she would enjoy delicate snacks and tea in the afternoon with friends. Before long, afternoon tea was the rage in fashionable society and enjoyed in all the best drawing rooms in Britain.
