The H J Sexton Arts Trust has looked after this Georgian landmark since 1945. That is when most of the extensive refurbishment was carried out so that it could be reopened to the citizens of Norwich for their use and enjoyment with a remit to promote cultural activities.
There are four exhibition rooms offering a variety of work from local, and international artists including paintings, photography, jewellery and antiques. They are named from prominent figures in the history of the house including
The Hobart Room, named after the celebrated Sir Henry Hobart and The Oliver Messel Gallery, taking its name from the respected film, stage and costume designer.
The Café Bar features monthly exhibitions which display a wide range of contemporary and traditional art following the same eclectic range of international and local sources.
The Music Room with its elegant grandeur is situated adjacent to the Grand Hall providing the ideal location for a concert or play with its 200 capacity theatre style seating. There is a small stage complete with Steinway Grand piano and the room is available to book for performances. For a full programme of forthcoming concerts please visit the Events page.
The Noverre Suite is larger than The Music Room and equally impressive, with chandeliers and large Georgian windows overlooking the Noverre Garden. Concerts and plays are held in this former ballroom. It is currently the location of The Assembly House resident theatre group ‘The Great Hall Theatre Company’, for more information please contact www.greathalltheatrecompany.co.uk.
